AFTER CARAVAGGIO - PAINTED FLOWERS, THE VIRTUAL EXHIBITION

From 19 December 2020 to 30 April 2021

PAINTED FLOWERS OF THE NAPOLETAN SEVENTEENTH CENTURY IN THE COLLECTIONS OF PALAZZO PRETORIO AND DE VITO FOUNDATION is the title of the small virtual exhibition curated by Nadia Bastogi and Rita Iacopino, which combines two paintings from Palazzo Pretorio with four canvases of the De Vito Foundation depicting still lives of flowers, examples of a genre that had an extraordinary development in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Naples. From the De Vito Foundation, two significant examples by Luca Forte are presented for the first time, head of the Neapolitan still life of Caravaggesque origin and two canvases by Giuseppe Recco, a successful exponent of one of the most important families of Neapolitan painters specializing in the genre, already sensitive to the Baroque developments, which animate the two sumptuous canvases by Gasparo Lopez, an artist also loved by the Medici patrons, belonging to the collections of Palazzo Pretorio.

The exhibition continues the line of dialogue between the Neapolitan seventeenth-century works of the two collections, in the context of the history of ancient and modern collecting aimed at Neapolitan artists and was to be inaugurated at the end of the "After Caravaggio exhibition. The Neapolitan seventeenth century in the collections of Palazzo Pretorio and the De Vito Foundation" (Prato Museo di Palazzo Pretorio) but, owing to the emergency, the organizing institutions have decided to make it virtual and to publish the catalog in both paper and virtual versions.
